Young Keat is forced to throw himself in with a ragged band of fur traders whose leader, Sam Drake, is as low down as dust mite on a tick's belly. Drake works Keat hard and shows no mercy. It's not until Keat meets Pem, a young North American Indian, that he remembers there is magic in life and people who love you. When Keat finds out that Drake intends to trade the goods of a man dead of small pox to Pem's people, he is forced to stand up to Drake. When he does, he not only saves his friend and his friend's family, but he gains his freedom.
